The Health Promotion Directorate is part of Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora, the public health agency established by the New Zealand Government to replace the country's 20 district health boards on 1 July 2022.

The Health Promotion Directorate has an overall function to lead and support activities for the following purposes:

  • Promoting health and wellbeing and encouraging healthy lifestyles.
  • Preventing disease, illness and injury
  • Enabling environments that support health and wellbeing and healthy lifestyles.
  • Reducing personal, social and economic harm.

It also has specific functions to provide advice and research on alcohol-related issues.
